Induction Motors: An Insight into its Functioning


Induction motors,

 also known as asynchronous motors, are one of the most common types of electric motors used in the industry. Their popularity can be attributed to their low maintenance and robust construction, making them suitable for a variety of applications.

The induction motor is essentially a type of AC (alternating current) motor that works on the principle of electromagnetic induction. It consists of a rotor, which rotates within a stationary stator. The stator has windings that are supplied with an AC current. This AC current creates a magnetic field that rotates around the stator, inducing an electric current in the rotor.

The rotor is not connected to a power source but instead creates a secondary magnetic field due to the current that is induced in it. The interaction between the two magnetic fields creates a torque, which drives the rotor to rotate. The rotor is designed to move at a slightly slower speed than the rotating magnetic field of the stator. This difference in speed is known as the slip, and it is what creates the torque necessary to turn the rotor.


There are two main types of induction motors: the squirrel-cage and wound-rotor motor. The squirrel-cage motor is the most common, as it is simple, rugged, and inexpensive. It consists of a cylindrical rotor with copper or aluminum bars arranged in a circular pattern around its circumference. The bars are connected at both ends by shorting rings and are embedded in a steel laminated core.

The wound-rotor motor is more complex and has a set of windings connected to the rotor. These windings can be controlled with additional external resistors or contactors, making it possible to change the motor's speed or torque. This type of motor is commonly used in cranes, hoists, and other heavy-duty applications.

The induction motor has several advantages over other types of motors. It is relatively low-cost, has a high starting torque, and requires minimal maintenance. It also has a high power-to-weight ratio, making it ideal for use in machines that require high power output without adding excess weight.
